BROWNSTOWN — The Eastern Hancock girls golf team opened their 2016 season with a 212-218 victory against Wapahani on Thursday.

The Royals were led by Abby Fout, who shot a nine-hole score of 49. Eastern Hancock’s four top golfers stayed under 60 each to secure a six-stroke win at Hickory Hills Golf Club.

Emiley Carlton had the Royals’ second lowest score of the match with a 51.

Alexis Young followed with a 54. Lucy Cochard rounded out the winning total with a 58.

Eastern Hancock is home at Royal Hylands for its next match against North Decatur on Tuesday. The dual is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Greenfield-Central takes 3rd in opener

The Greenfield-Central girls golf team struggled in their first match of the season with a third-place finish in a three-way with Whiteland and Columbus East on Thursday.

Whiteland won the event with a 189. Columbus East was second at 193.

The Cougars top-three golfers all scored above their 2015 averages, said head coach Russ Wiley, which led to a frustrating four-person total of 218.

Lindsey McCord paced the lineup with a 48 followed by Megan Garner’s 50. Amanda Edwards carded a nine-hole score of 58. Phoenix Breese completed the scoring with a 62.

The Cougars return to the course and host Rushville on Monday at Hawk’s Tail in Greenfield.
