Cougars volleyball youth league set
The Greenfield-Central Youth Volleyball League presented by The Academy Volleyball Club will begin Aug. 9.
Open to all first- through eighth-graders (both boys and girls), the league runs from Aug. 9 until Oct. 8.
Cost to join is $125 per person and includes a practice shirt and jersey. Participants also receive a free Greenfield-Central T-shirt that will serve as a season pass to all home high school matches.
Teams will practice on weeknights in Greenfield and play Saturday matches at The Academy Volleyball Club. There are no matches on Labor Day weekend.
All teams will be coached by a Greenfield coaching representative or Academy coach.

NFHS approves changes for softball rule book
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Softball Rules Committee approved four additions to Rule 3 regarding uniforms, equipment and substitutions at its summer meeting in Indianapolis.
Rule 3-2-15 says all equipment will be inspected by the umpire, and is to be placed outside the dugout/bench prior to the start of the game.
In Rule 3-2-1, the committee added inclement weather as an exception to the uniform rule for state associations.
The Softball Rules Committee also approved new language to Rule 3-2-7 to reinforce the solid color undergarments requirements.
In Rule 3-6-7, which says players and substitutes should not enter the contest unreported, the penalty was revised to say the head coach is restricted to the dugout/bench for the remainder of the game only for a second violation.
The committee also revised Rule 1-5-2c by eliminating the description of the taper’s surface. This change brings the NFHS in line with other rules codes concerning the surface of the taper.

Fever player named to U.S. select team
Featuring eight athletes who have won gold as a member of at least one USA Basketball team, the 11-member USA Basketball Women’s Select Team was announced this month, including Indiana Fever’s Tiffany Mitchell.
Also named to the 2016 USA Select Team were Kelsey Bone (Phoenix Mercury); Kahleah Copper (Washington Mystics); Stefanie Dolson (Washington Mystics); Natasha Howard (Minnesota Lynx); Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm); Aerial Powers (Dallas Wings); Sugar Rodgers (New York Liberty); Odyssey Sims (Dallas Wings); Kiah Stokes (New York Liberty); and Elizabeth Williams (Atlanta Dream).
The USA Select Team will train alongside the 2016 USA Women’s National Team on July 23 and 24 in Los Angeles.

Indianapolis Colts preseason schedule
The Indianapolis Colts open their preseason schedule in less than three weeks at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Aug. 7. The Colts will be home at Lucas Oil Stadium for two of their five warm-up games.
