FOUNTAINTOWN — Police are investigating the death of a 2-month-old Fountaintown child who was found unresponsive Wednesday afternoon in bed, where he’d been sleeping alongside his mother.

Detectives say they believe the child’s death was an accident, though an autopsy will be conducted Thursday to confirm a cause of death.

Emergency crews were called to the 500 block of U.S. 52 Est in Fountaintown just after noon Wednesday.

Deanna VanMeter, the child’s mother, awoke to find the baby wasn’t breathing, police said.

She told police the child had been asleep next to her in her bed, officers said.

The mother called 911 and immediately started CPR. First-responders arrived and continued life-saving efforts while rushing the baby to Hancock Regional Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

The baby did not have any visible injuries, investigators said. He and another child in the home appeared to have been well taken care of, investigators said.

Detectives and representatives from the Indiana Department of Child Services searched the home as a precaution but found nothing suspicious, police said.
