James William Flake, age 56, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016. He was born on Oct. 18, 1959 in Indianapolis as the son of Robert “Bob” Flake and Nelda (McClain) Darnell.

He graduated from Franklin Central High School in 1978. After high school, Jim played football while attending Indiana University. He married Salliann (Waitt) on Nov. 27, 2002, in Greenfield.

He worked as a project manager for Tyler Technologies in Dayton, Ohio. Jim coached the youth football team, managed the Central Indiana Rays baseball team and attended New Palestine United Methodist  Church. He was a linebacker for Indiana University where he also played in the 1979 Holiday Bowl. Jim enjoyed spending time with his children, coaching football, IU, Colts, IndyCar and NASCAR, all sports and the outdoors.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sally Flake of Greenfield; children, Tiffany Long of Ocean Springs, Mississippi and Trace Flake of Greenfield; step-children, Savannah Sturm of Greenfield and Chase Sturm of Greenfield; father, Bob Flake of New Port Richey, Florida; sisters, Karen (Bill) Danforth of New Port Richey, Florida and Genetta (Greg) Coy of Trafalgar ; and grandchildren, Chancey Long and Kinnley Long.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nelda Darnell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, 3519 S. 600 W., New Palestine, IN 46163. Pastor Mark Havel will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent directly to the Jim Flake Memorial Fund at any Greenfield Banking Company or envelopes will be available at the mortuary.
