Library looking for program volunteers

GREENFIELD — What would a pioneer family pack in its covered wagon to survive the 1830 Indiana wilderness?

The Hancock County Public Library is looking to train retired-teacher volunteers for a classroom-based outreach program to help local fourth grade students learn more about Indiana’s pioneer days.

During school visits, volunteers guide fourth graders in selecting, from an assortment of miniatures, what will fit in their covered wagon and what must be left behind.

Volunteers will discuss the hardships of traveling by wagon, different functions of each part of the wagon and the traditional roles and responsibilities that each family member had as part of pioneer life.

Request a volunteer application at the library desk or download the form at hcplibrary.org/about/volunteer.htm. Contact Mary Lynn Burrows at 317- 462-5141, ext. 210, or [email protected].
