Driver falls asleep, car rolls into pond

GREENFIELD — A car rolled into a Greenfield retention pond Wednesday morning, leaving the woman inside scrambling to climb to safety.

Police said the woman, whose name had not been released at press time, fell asleep in a car stopped in her driveway in the 2300 block of Bomar Boulevard in Greenfield. She thought the vehicle was in park, she told police, and dozed off after a late night working.

The car rolled down an embankment and crashed into a retention pond in the woman’s backyard, police said.

The front window on the driver’s side of the car was open, and the driver woke when water started to pour into the vehicle, police said. The woman was able to climb from the car uninjured. Investigators say they have no reason to believe the woman was impaired at the time of the incident.

Emergency crews were called Wed-nesday afternoon to help pull the vehicle from the water.
