INDIANAPOLIS — In a game filled with offense, delays, umpiring and coaches’ conferences, and some more offense, it was the Mt. Vernon Marauders who won the battle of wills Tuesday night.

The Class 4A Marauders defeated Warren Central 19-8 in the Sectional 10 semifinals and will advance to face the Cathedral Fighting Irish on Thursday night for the crown.

The Marauders advancement was anything but a sure thing after the first inning. Despite first baseman Morgan Moss’ two-run homer in the top of the frame, shaky defense by Mt. Vernon lead to six runs for Warren Central.

Despite the quick punch by the Warriors, the Marauders showed they had no intention of going away, as they scored four runs next inning to tie the game. Makenzie Gee lead off the inning with a double to kick things off in the second. Gee would finish the game 4-for-4 with three more singles added.

Heading into the fourth inning down 8-7, the Marauders bats reached the boiling point, leading to seven runs in the inning and the game being effectively put out of reach. To cap off the seven-run inning, Sadie Baugh laced a double to drive in three runs. Baugh would finish the night 3-for-5 with two doubles and six runs driven in.

After adding five runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Marauders were ahead ten runs, which allowed the game to end after five innings instead of the regulation seven.

Mt. Vernon will play for the sectional championship on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. against Cathedral at Warren Central High School.
