Hobby career

GREENFIELD — For Dana Cottey, cutting hair began as a hobby, with her three children as her only clients.

But after her three kids grew up and moved out, she found herself missing the satisfaction she felt after completing a haircut. So five years ago, Cottey decided to go to beauty school to earn her cosmetology license.

Last week, Cottey of Greenfield opened the doors to her own salon, Downtown Cuts, 118 S. Pennsylvania St. in Greenfield.

Inside the small storefront, Cottey has placed historic photos of downtown Greenfield throughout, including images of the Hancock County Courthouse and businesses along Main Street.

The salon serves men, women and children, Cottey said.

Her services also include beard- and mustache-trimming.

Cottey is the business’ sole employee, and the store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Both walk-ins and appointments are welcome, she said.

Cottey said she’s grown to enjoy the small conversations she holds with clients while cutting hair.

“Sometimes people just sit in the chair, and it’s a time for them to vent,” Cottey said.
