Dragons stay at 1st in softball rankings

The New Palestine softball team earned the top spot in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association’s Class 3A rankings again this week.

In last week’s poll, they made their move, overtaking Jasper for first in the state. At 19-2 overall this season, the Dragons are 5-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, locked in a three-way tie with Shelbyville and Yorktown for first.

New Palestine has won eight straight games since losing to Shelbyville 5-2 on April 28.

Greenfield-Central dropped to 20th in the 4A rankings. Eastern Hancock was ranked 16th in the 2A rankings.

Mt. Vernon opens sectional competition

The pairings for the Mt. Vernon Sectional were drawn Monday, and the host Marauders will open the tennis tournament at 5 p.m. today.

No. 28 Mt. Vernon drew newcomer Pendleton Heights, which is ranked sixth in District 4. The Marauders are third in District 4 and are 14-1 on the year.

Greenfield-Central and Eastern Hancock play in the semifinals, with New Palestine awaiting the winner between Mt. Vernon and Pendleton Heights in the other semifinal Thursday.

The championship is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, with Saturday serving as the tournament’s rain makeup date.

Six winners headline 100th 500 entry list

INDIANAPOLIS — Six drivers whose images are immortalized on the famed Borg-Warner Trophy for winning the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” are among those named to entries filed for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29.

Thirty-three drivers have been named for the 33 entered cars at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Honda will provide 17 entries, while Chevrolet has 16.

Former Indianapolis 500 champions entered include a pair of multiple winners in Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002 and 2009) and Juan Pablo Montoya (2000 and 2015) of Team Penske.
