Softball

Cougars’ slump continues

The Greenfield-Central softball team’s recent woes continued Wednesday, as the Class 4A No. 13 Cougars lost to Shenandoah 12-6.

The loss marked Greenfield-Central’s third in four games, beginning with their defeats against Hoosier Heritage Conference rivals Yorktown and Mt. Vernon on April 27 and 29, respectively.

On Wednesday, back-to-back big innings in the fourth and fifth cost the host Cougars with Shenandoah pulling ahead 9-2. Greenfield-Central trailed 1-0 before tying it 1-all in the bottom of the third.

The Raiders (9-6) plated three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to take a commanding lead. They added three more runs in the seventh.

Erika Knapp led the Cougars offensively, going 2-for-2 with two runs while Morganne Denny was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sydney Williams finished 1-for-2 with an RBI. Codey Miller and Makayla Durick also drove in runs.

Darcie Huber and Maria Kihega both recorded doubles. Williams (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season.

The Cougars dropped to 11-3 and 5-2 at home.

Dragons stay in HHC race

The Class 3A No. 2 New Palestine Dragons improved to 3-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 10-2 win against Pendleton Heights on Wednesday.

Tied for second, the Dragons (13-2, 3-1 HHC) have won two consecutive games and 10 of their past 11. Their only losses to date are against Class 4A No. 9 Franklin Central and HHC foe Shelbyville.

Against the visiting Arabians, coach Ed Marcum’s squad wasted little time, going up 2-0 in the first before breaking a 2-all tie with a six-run fourth. The Dragons added two more runs in the fifth, while the pitching staff held the Arabians scoreless through the final four frames.

Madison Whitaker was 2-for-3 at the plate for New Palestine with two RBIs and two doubles. Elisha Barker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Issy Hoyt was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Ashley Prange was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Tara Morey was 3-for-4 with a triple.
