Mt. Vernon grad earns top IPFW honor

IPFW freshman Olivia Coleman was honored as the 2016 Female Athlete of the Year during the 2016 Masty Awards this week at the Rhinehart Music Center in Fort Wayne.

The Mt. Vernon graduate was presented with the annual award by Kent Hormann and IPFW Director of Athletics Kelley Hartley Hutton.

This season, Coleman earned All-Summit League honors at the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 400-meter dash, running a school-record time of 56.12.

She also placed in the long jump with a school-record mark of 5.49 meters. Coleman was also a part of the record-breaking and conference scoring 1,600-meter relay team.

It is anticipated that Coleman will earn All-League honors in the 400 at the upcoming Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships next month, as well as qualify for the USATF Junior Outdoor National Championships.

Mt. Vernon softball hosting Youth Night

The Mt. Vernon softball program is conducting a Youth Night on May 6 during the Marauders home game against Westfield.

All youth softball players in the eighth grade and younger are invited to join the varsity softball team for the evening. 

Youth players wearing their jerseys will gain free admission. The Youth events will start at 5 p.m. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m.

All youth players will be able to high-five players and line up with the team during the national anthem. 

After the game, all youth players will be allowed to run the bases and have cookies with the team.

Staff Appreciation Night planned at Mt. Vernon

The Mt. Vernon softball program is hosting Staff Appreciation Night on May 11.

Staff members are invited to participate in pregame activities at 5 p.m. The varsity team plays Lawrence North at 5:30 p.m.

Bernie Campbell is scheduled to throw out the first pitch. After the game, honorees will have a chance to run the bases and have refreshments with the players.

New Palestine physical night next month

New Palestine High School will host its 2016 athletic physical night from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 24.

All New Palestine High School and Doe Creek Middle School students participating must have a physical on file to participate in sports for the 2016-17 school year.

The cost for the physicals is $25.

The IHSAA physical form for 2016 has changed. All physicals must be signed by a physician (M.D. or D.O.) and include the physician’s license number at the bottom of the second page.

Signature stamps will no longer be accepted. The updated form is available in the New Palestine athletics office.

Rucker to sing national anthem at 500

Three-time GRAMMY Award winner and multi-platinum recording artist Darius Rucker will perform the national anthem before the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

Rucker will sing in the traditional spot on “500” Race Day before the 33 drivers are called to their cars and the singing of “Back Home Again in Indiana.”

The Indianapolis 500 is on May 29.
