CHARLOTTESVILLE — Eastern Hancock Elementary School students are working to contribute to their community in four different areas.

Students have been collecting Box Tops for Education, said principal Amanda Pyle. Third-grade teacher Lauren Kramer’s class collected the most to win a classroom party. Altogether, students collected 10,388, which will help pay for items at the elementary school.

The school recently donated $2,630.76 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Pyle said the school has donated a total of $44,150.06 since it began contributing to the hospital. In addition, elementary students donated $7,300 to Jump Rope for Heart, an event to benefit the American Heart Association.

Also, Girl Scout Troop 53 conducted a book drive the two weeks before spring break, collecting a total of 2,400 books from the student body to donate to Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen and Riley Children’s Hospital. Suzanne Eischen’s first-grade class will receive a pizza party after spring break for their hard work.
