GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central Cougars will have a familiar face on the tennis courts this year in Michael Turpin.

While in his first year with the girls team, the Greenfield-Central graduate and former assistant coach kicked off his head coaching tenure by leading the boys to a competitive 12-12 season this past fall.

The decision to promote Turpin was a perfect fit for the boys, one the girls team hopes helps the Cougars improved from a 4-9 record last year.

“We’ve been working every day and are focused on getting better. We have good hopes for this season,” Turpin said.

While he has previous coaching experience, Turpin is taking his time on establishing a lineup for the Cougars this season.

“We haven’t set anything. We have some returning players, but we are still looking to see where players fall into place,” he said.

Those returning are Emma Vail, Sarah Hudson, Kate Henderson, Lindsey McCord and Hayden Goodwin.

“It appears everyone has made improvements, and I think we can be good once county and sectional comes around,” Turpin said.

“We are working, and at the end of the day, we want to do our best.”
