GREENFIELD — Billowing black smoke clouded the skies above rush hour traffic Monday after a car hauler caught fire on Interstate 70.

The tractor-trailer carrying nine Subaru vehicles caught fire on westbound I-70 near County Road 400E around 6 p.m., police said. Westbound traffic was halted and eastbound traffic stalled as crews from the Greenfield Fire Territory, Buck Creek Township and Sugar Creek Township fire departments fought the blaze, which quickly spread to neighboring fields.

Police broadcasts indicate several explosions were heard as the vehicles the truck was carrying burned.

The truck’s driver was the sole occupant and escaped without injury.
