GREENFIELD — A dog alerted its owners to a fire in the garage of their home early Thursday, giving them time to escape and call for help before the fire spread.

Crews with the Greenfield Fire Territory responded to a garage fire in the 300 block of School Street in Greenfield just before 1 a.m. Thursday.

The fire did not spread the house, and the garage can be rebuilt, firefighters said. All the family’s belongings that were stored in the garage were lost, however.

Greenfield Fire Marshall Brian Lott said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials believe an electrical issue might have sparked the blaze.

Because there was no smoke detector in the garage, firefighters said they believe the family’s dog woke its owners and alerted them to the fire. The two people home at the time were able to escape the house without injury.
