Family threatens police lawsuit after car wreck

GREENFIELD — A local family has threatened to sue the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department after a deputy was involved in a car accident while suffering from a medical issue.

The accident occurred Feb. 12 in the 3300 block of West U.S. 40, when a squad car driven by Deputy Ted York collided with another car. York, who is a diabetic, was treated at the hospital after the crash for his “dangerously low blood sugar level,” according to an accident report.

Attorney Ken Nunn represents Erica D. Porter of Greenfield, the mother of a child who was in the car, and sent a notice of tort claim to the department March 1.

A notice of tort claim is filed in advance of a lawsuit.

The claim states the child “incurred medical expenses as a result of the incident and will incur future medical expenses.”

No injuries other than York’s are noted in the accident report.
