James H. Poindexter, 72, of McCordsville, formally of Tompkinsville, Ky., born June 21, 1943, to the late Dessie V. (Crabtree) and Jeff Poindexter in Clay County, Tenn., passed away March 4, 2016, at Hancock Regional Hospital.

James moved to Indiana to live with his wife, Betty J. (Sheffield) Poindexter, of 55 years, in 1961. He took a job at a machine shop, and from there he worked for Gordon Wilson Construction and Casey Excavating, where he learned some tools of the trade he would need to become the Founder of Poindexter Excavating in January of 1974 and later Co. Owner of Poindexter Transport and Crain Services of Lawrence. In 1992, he retired from the excavating business and moved back to Kentucky and started Poindexter Farms, where he and his late brother, Bobby Poindexter, built a very large and successful cattle farm. In 2011, he and Betty moved back to Indiana, where he spent the remainder of his life surrounded by his family and friends.

James is the loving father of Jamie Denise, Richard Glen and Melony Machelle Poindexter. Grandfather of James Robinson, Jennifer Howard, Jamie Marshall, Zachary Poindexter, Casey Poindexter, Jaleesa Poindexter and Cody Mastin. Great- grandfather of Skye, Erika, Makinnzi, Aron, Madison, Kaitlynn, Bentley, Maeson, Easton and Hudson. He was the brother of Jess, Dale, Lester, Bobby and Bill Poindexter and sister, Bonnie Rhoton.

He is proceeded in death by his mother and father, one son, Richard and one brother, Bobby.

Pallbearers will be James Robinson, Zachary Poindexter, Casey Poindexter, Cody Mastin, William Marshall, Terry Howard, Jerry Robinson and Steve Campbell.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, with a service at 6:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at 1 p.m. CST at Monroe County Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Tompkinsville, Ky.
