New Pal’s Red earns national accolade

New Palestine’s Chad Red captured his fourth straight championship at the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals last weekend and with it national recognition.

On Monday, FloWrestling named Red the FloWrestler of the Week presented by Cliff Keen.

The senior finished his career a perfect 183-0 while carrying the nation’s top ranking in his weight class.

Red defeated Evansville Mater Dei’s Nick Lee, who is ranked fourth nationally, 6-5 in the 132-pound championship.

Other nominees: Louie Hayes, Carl Sandburg (Ill.); Joey Ward, University of North Carolina; Wyatt Wriedt, North Scott (Iowa).

Marauders baseball conducting Trivia Night

The Mt. Vernon baseball team is conducting a Trivia Night fundraiser today inside the high school cafeteria.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with dinner, provided by Kinsey’s, followed by trivia at 7 p.m.

The cost is $10 per student and $20 per adult and includes game play, dinner, a drink and dessert.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go to help the baseball team.

Seton Catholic senior earns weekly award

Seton Catholic senior Desmond Bane poured in 62 points in a game and averaged 39.0 points over two games to earn IBCA/Subway Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 15 to 20.

He was joined by Huntington North senior Konner Platt, Washington senior Colten Garland, Oregon-Davis senior Lexi Minix, Lafayette Central Catholic senior Cameron Onken and North Harrison sophomore Taylor Rennirt as recipients in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

IHSAA girls basketball State Finals this weekend

The schedule for Saturday’s 41st Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals has been set.

The first of two sessions at Bankers Life Fieldhouse will start with Class A at 10:30 a.m. and end with Class 2A.

The second session opens at 6 p.m. with Class 3A followed by Class 4A at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Admission for the state finals is $15 per session.

All four state championship games will air live on Fox Sports Indiana.
