Mary Ruth (Hastings) Nigh

Mary Ruth (Hastings) Nigh, 101, of Greenfield, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Springhurst Health Campus.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1914, in Cleveland, Ind., as the daughter of Albert O. and Maude E. (Thomas) Hastings. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1932 and attended Metropolitan School of Business in Indianapolis. Mary married Norman Nigh on September 3, 1937 in Greenfield.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Greenfield Friends Church, Curry’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was a current member of Bradley United Methodist Church. Mrs. Nigh currently belonged to Tri Kappa Beta and was a former member of Center Township Homemakers Club, Hancock County Historical Society, Hancock Fair Board, Bookmark Club and Farm Bureau. She was a Girl Scout leader and assistant leader of a Brownie Troop.  She was a founding leader of the Angel in Aprons 4-H Club and served in the Hancock County Republican Women. She was also a 12-year member of the Hancock Central Booster Organization.

Mary is survived by her sons, Tom (Pat) Nigh of Greenfield and John (Cindy) Nigh of Cheyenne, W.Y.; daughter, Jane (Robert) Salnick of Camano, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Mariana Nigh of Vero Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Cheryl (Kent) London, Mark (Christina) Nigh, Eric (Tania) Nigh, Erica (Ken) Prentice, Adam (Kaci) Salnick, April (John Bishop) Nigh, Norman Nigh and Nicole Nigh; and 14 great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert O. and Maude E. (Thomas) Hastings; son, Bill Nigh; two sisters, Margaret and Katherine and brother, Albert “Bus”.

Visitation will be held 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will take place immediately following the visitation at 1 p.m. Reverend Linda Brackney will be officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
