Educator to receive sportswriter honor

Andrew Smith, former sports editor of the Daily Reporter, will be one of 10 individuals honored by the Indiana Sportswriters & Sportscasters Association on April 10 at the annual Hall of Fame banquet.

Smith, who is a teacher at New Palestine High School, is this year’s Bob Williams Helping Hand Award recipient.

Throughout the course of his career, Smith has broadcast a wide range of sporting events from high school sports in Hancock County to Franklin College athletics.

In addition, Smith coaches at New Palestine and serves as the sports information director for Dragons athletics. He’s also the public address announcer for the Indy Fuel.

This year’s ISSA Hall of Fame class includes: Kent Hormann, Pete DiPrimio, Matt Kopsea, Dan Korb, Chris Denari and Bob Nagle.

Other annual award winners joining Smith are Marv Bates Sportscaster of the Year: Michael Grady; Corky Lamm Sportswriter of the Year: Al Lesar; Ron Lemasters Lifetime Achievement Award: Ron Lemasters.

Sectional basketball tourney tickets on sale

All-session tickets for the Class 4A Sectional 9 girls basketball tournament are on sale now.

This year’s tournament will be played at Mt. Vernon High School, beginning Tuesday and running through the championship game Feb. 6.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Greenfield-Central Athletics Office during regular school hours.

Fans also can buy tickets at every varsity home event now until the sectional tournament begins next week.

Tickets are $10, which are good for the entire tournament (all five games). Single-session tickets will be sold at the door the days of the games.

Online registration open for soccer club

The Greenfield Area Soccer Club has opened its online registration for the 2016 spring TigersFC recreational season.

Children ages 2½ to 18 are eligible to participate. To register online visit greenfieldsoccer.org. Registration will run now through March 6.

All players are required to register, including those children that played previously.

In addition, the club will be conducting a walk-in registration at the Hancock Public Library on Feb. 20 and 27 at Dick’s Sporting Goods located at East Washington.
