Frieda L. (Courtney) Dunkerson

Frieda L. (Courtney) Dunkerson, 92, Fishers, entered heaven on Jan. 3, 2016. She was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Evansville, Ind., to Fred and Cecil Johnson.

She is survived by her brother, Fred; children, Uldine Silcox, Judy Warner (Russ), Russ Courtney (Rita), Nancy Courtney, Marty Dunkerson, Cathy Parido (David), Cyndi Jones (Larry), David Dunkerson (Phyllis), and Greg Dunkerson (Virginia); 40 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marcus L. Dunkerson, a son, William Courtney, stepchildren, Marietta, Winona, Luther, and Henry; brothers Delmar and Bob and sisters, Zelma and Dorothy.

Frieda was a lifelong Christian and was an inspiration to her large family and their friends. Her famous words were to be “Happy, Happy Happy” and “I love you, but Jesus loves you more.”

She grew up in Elwood, Ind., where she loved to roller skate and attend the local movie theater. She and her husband purchased the old Zion Church on Olio road, where she has lived for over 45 years — watching the area change from farmland to many beautiful neighborhoods. In May of this year, she was featured in the May edition of the Fishers Magazine — winning the honor of being “Fishers Mother of the Year”.

She was the life of the party at our annual reunions. One year, she danced on a picnic table at age 86 — after hip replacement surgery. She had told her surgeon she would be doing this at the next reunion, after God guided his hands through the “best surgery he ever had”.

Through personal stories and Facebook posts, many friends of the family feel like they have come to know her even though some have never met her. She has touched countless lives — setting an example from her favorite scripture and commandment “to love one another”.

We are thankful to Community Hospital Hospice care staff for their wonderful support during this past year.

Viewing was held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at Seals Funeral Home 122 West St., Fortville, Ind. Chapel service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN.
