GREENFIELD — Officials are awaiting the results of an autopsy report to determine how a man whose body was found near on the city’s north side Wednesday morning died.

Detectives were called to the wooded area near the intersection of State Road 9 and Opportunity Parkway, just north of Interstate 70, around 9:30 a.m.

A family member of the victim, whose name had not been released at press time, discovered his body and called police, officials said.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning; the man appeared to have suffered a single gunshot wound, police said.

Greenfield Police Chief John Jester said it’s too early to say whether the injury was self-inflicted. A cause of death — suicide, homicide natural or unknown — will be determined by the Hancock County Coroner’s Office.

The man was found lying on the ground in front of a clump of trees a few feet from the Speedway gas station and not far from Elanco headquarters.

A family member of the victim had been out looking for him and spotted the man’s car parked along Opportunity Parkway. His body was found a short time later, police said.
