$4,000 gift to cover police dog’s surgery

SHIRLEY — AT&T Pioneers, a volunteer organization made up of AT&T employees and retirees, donated $4,000 to the Shirley Police Department recently to cover the remaining medical costs of the department’s only K9 officer, Charon.

The dog underwent emergency surgery in November to correct a life-threatening case of gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly referred to as a flipped stomach.

Shirley’s officers usually rely on the community to cover Charon’s expenses, including food and vet bills. The department needed $5,000 to pay for Charon’s surgery.

Charon assists on calls in Hancock, Henry, Madison and Shelby counties.
