Hoosier Heritage honors area football players

Several of the county’s top football players were honored with All-Hoosier Heritage Conference First Team selections and honorable mentions.

HHC champion New Palestine earned nine first-team spots in Logan Greene (defensive back), James Crumlin (linebacker), Joe Izbicki (linebacker), Jordan Workman (defensive line), Spencer Corey (kicker), Nick Brickens (running back), Alex Neligh (quarterback), Duke Blackwell (wide receiver), and Andrew Yazel (offensive line).

Honorable mentions for the Dragons went to: Luke Ely, Brady Walden, Matt Moeller, Thaddaeus Muse, Austin Keele, Brett Luker, Demetre Mitchell, Nick Derheimer, David Judy, and Adam Kincaid.

Greenfield-Central’s Andy Kim was named All-HHC First Team at defensive line. Six of this teammates were selected as honorable mentions in: Ryan Hoskins, Aaron Young, Jeremiah Fields, K.J. Mills, Bryce Ratliff, and Orlando Mojica.

Mt. Vernon had two players voted to the All-HHC First team. Charles DeGraff was elected as a defensive lineman, and Nathan Seifert was named as a linebacker.

Honorable mentions went to five Marauders: Blake Slunaker, Nick Anderson, Jimmy Campbell, Mitch McCarthy, and Luke Yeadon.

Coach of the Year honors were shared by New Palestine’s Kyle Ralph and Pendleton Heights’ John Broughton.

Tickets on sale now for 2016 season at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — Tickets are on sale for the 2016 season at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which includes the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and a slate of Verizon IndyCar Series, NASCAR and vintage racing at IMS.

The season kicks off May 14 with the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, contested on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Next up is the Indy 500 on May 29.

On June 19, hundreds of the world’s most historic racecars will compete on the road course and 2.5-mile oval in the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series Lilly Diabetes 250 will take place July 23, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Crown Royal Presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard is July 24.

Mt. Vernon wrestlers conducting fundraiser

The Mt. Vernon Middle School wrestling team is conducting a soap fundraiser, selling laundry detergent liquid and pods, and dish soap and pods.

For each bucket of soap sold, the team will make $10.

The next order is due at the end of the month, but the team also will be placing orders all year so anytime anyone wants a refill or to place a new order, the opportunity will be available.
