The 15th-ranked Mt. Vernon Marauders continue to dominate. 

After opening the season with two girls basketball wins in the first week against Class 4A Franklin and Warren Central, the Marauders picked up two more to improve to 4-0.

On Friday, Mt. Vernon traveled to Connersville and faced minimal resistance, winning 47-13. The Marauders capped their back-to-back weekend with a 74-8 thrashing of Indianapolis Marshall at home.

Sydney Shelton posted a team-high 21 points against Connersville, shooting 4-of-15 from the field and 3-for-11 from 3-point range.

Against Marshall, the Marauders jumped out to a 29-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, holding the visitors to three points in the second and five in the fourth.

Royals surge to 3-0

Eastern Hancock remains unbeaten on the season with a 36-21 win on the road against Centerville on Friday night.

Peyton West paced the offense with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kaysi Gilbert led the team with nine rebounds (six off the defensive glass), and Hope Spaulding chipped in nine points.

Leah Ferguson finished with six point and five rebounds.

The Royals were coming off a 64-42 win against Elwood on last Wednesday. West scored a team-high 18 points followed by Spaulding’s 13.

Cougars pounce on Bronchos

The Greenfield-Central Cougars went to work fast on Saturday night, defeating Lafayette Jefferson 75-37.

Madison Wise scored a game-high 32 points as Greenfield-Central led 39-15 by halftime.

Katie Helgason had 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and added four assists.

Wise posted a double-double with 15 rebounds (nine defensive) while also supplying five assists, five steals and seven blocks.

Greenfield-Central is now 2-0 on the season.

Dragons fall short

The New Palestine girls basketball team rallied late but fell just short against Southport on the road Saturday night.

The Dragons trailed 20-6, but a team-high 11 points from Raegan McMurray and nine points from Natalie Kehrt helped pull New Palestine back into the game.

Haley Stratman finished with six points, and the freshman duo of Megan Jolly and Haley Harrison each provided five points.

The Dragons dropped to 1-2 with the loss.

Girls swimming

Marauders take 2nd at Franklin

The Mt. Vernon girls swimming team finished runner-up at Franklin Community on Saturday.

The host Grizzly Cubs won the five-team event with a score of 278. The Marauders scored 123 points.

Third went to Greensburg (86), fourth to Milan (27) and fifth to Greenwood Christian Academy (21).
