Local residents receive awards at baking contest

Phyllis Patterson was the grand champion winner at the annual Bakers Best Contest conducted Sept. 26 in Greenfield at the Hancock County Purdue Extension Building.

Thirty-four entries were submitted for judging in the pumpkin-themed contest sponsored by Tuttle Orchards and Hancock County Extension Homemakers. The Ahwenasha Extension Homemakers Club, led by Debbie Green, club president, hosted the event.

Patterson, of Greenfield, was the category champion of cakes, and the cake garnered the top prize of grand champion.

Rose Reiser of Greenfield was the champion of pies with her pumpkin pie, which featured pastry cutouts of pumpkins on the top. Debbie Shouffler VanSickle, Greenfield, took champion honors with her pumpkin bread recipe. Carla Lynch of Fountaintown earned champion honors for her pumpkin cookies. The “other” category was won by Linda Parks of Willow Branch.
