Fay Aerrious (Scott, Shields) Schmutte, 87, of Indianapolis, passed peacefully Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at Golden Living Center – Brandywine, Greenfield, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born on Aug. 7, 1928, in Hall, Ind., as the daughter of Sherman and Pauline (Bell) Scott.

Fay married Jesse Lowell “Popeye” Shields on March 27, 1950 in Fortville, and later married Carl Schmutte on Jan. 17, 1987.

She worked for Western Electric for 32 years before retiring in April 1985.  She was a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother who enjoyed crochet, sewing, traveling and an excellent Southern-style cook known for her fried apple and meringue pies.

Fay is survived by her son, Randall Daye (Patrice) Shields of Greenfield; daughter, Toby Faye (Rick) Bell of Indianapolis; brothers, Elijah “Pete” (Nina) Scott and Steven (Sheila) Scott; sisters, Iris (Richard) Duclos and Evelyn McCluskey; sister-in-law, Jean Scott; six grandchildren, Keller Shields, Alexis (Shannon Weeks) Shields, Zachary Shields, Jocelyn (Phil) Bailey, Olivia (Matthew) Jones and Scott (Shelby) Bell; and three great- grandchildren, Kennedy Jones, Landon Bell, Greyson Bell and soon to be born Harrison Jones along with a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Pauline (Bell) Scott; first husband, Jesse Shields; second husband, Carl Schmutte; brothers, Maurice Scott and Loshell Scott.

Visitation will be held from 3:30- 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. The family will hold a private memorial service following the visitation.
