GREENFIELD — The county’s SWAT team was called to a Greenfield motel Saturday night after a woman barricaded herself in her room with her dogs and shot herself.

Police were called to the Shamrock Motel in the 5200 block of West U.S. 40 around 9:30 p.m. after the victim’s boyfriend called 911. He told dispatchers the woman, who remained in stable condition at an Indianapolis hospital Monday, was armed with a 9-mm handgun, according to emergency call records.

Officers at the scene called the SWAT team after hearing a single shot fired inside the room. The team entered the residence just after 1 a.m. and found the woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.

The two dogs that were locked in the room with the woman were taken to Greenfield-Hancock Animal Management.

The incident kept both lanes of U.S. 40 closed between county roads 500W and 600W.

More than 30 officers from the sheriff’s department, and Greenfield, McCordsville and Fortville police departments were on scene during the course of the call; none were injured in the incident, police said.
