Bicentennial organizers looking for local help

GREENFIELD — Indiana will celebrate its 200th birthday in 2016, and a group of local organizers are looking for residents to help plan Hancock County’s role in the festivities.

A planning meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce, 1 Courthouse Plaza.

As part of a statewide celebration, a torch relay across all 92 counties will kick off in September 2016. It will travel through Hancock County on Oct. 14, 2016, before returning to Marion County.

Local organizers are looking for 20 torchbearers to travel with the route around Hancock County. Deadline to nominate someone to be a torch-bearer is Dec. 31. A nomination form can be downloaded at in.gov/ibc/torchrelay/2621.htm. The forms also are available for pickup at the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum, 250 W. Main St., Greenfield.
