Jimmy Douglas Hill, 73, of Greenfield, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 6, 2015. He was born Jan. 30, 1942, to JC and Ruby (Barnett) Hill, in Russell, Ark.
He was enlisted in the Indiana National Guard prior to his swimming accident in July 1957, that left him paralyzed and then was relieved of his duties. He worked for the Indiana State Police – District #51 and Meijer.
He was a board member of the Independent Residential Living of Central Indiana and received the 1996 Chalice Award in recognition of outstanding achievement at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center Inc.
He was very independent and loved to ride around town in his motorized wheelchair. He then became an advocate for those who needed wheelchair accessible sidewalks and ramps and was instrumental in working with the City of Greenfield for the development of more handicap accessible sidewalks throughout Greenfield. He also loved to bowl and was a member of the Indy Wheelers bowling team for many years.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Greenfield and loved his church family.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his sisters, Katie Day, Nell Hammons and Gwen (Cart) Graddy, all of Greenfield and Brenda (Dennis) Leimer of Bloomington; several nieces; nephews; great- nieces and great- nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Ruth Coil; brothers-in-law, Norman Hammons and Paul Day; niece, Angel Sizemore and nephews Gary Coil and Rickey Day.
Visitation will be held from 4- 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, also at the mortuary. Pastor Roger Kinion will officiate. Burial will follow services at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
