David J. Merlau, 55, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Ky. He was born on Dec. 26, 1959, in Greenfield, as the son of Judith “Judi” (Etter) and Charles W. Merlau, Jr. He graduated from New Palestine High School in 1978.

David was a farmer in the Hancock County area, as well as a mechanic and welder. He attended New Palestine United Methodist Church and was a previous member of the Oaklandon Masonic Lodge and was a member of Murat Shrine.

He was a coin and rock collector and loved spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and John Deere Tractor.

David is survived by his children, Rena Atkins of McCordsville, Brandy Merlau of Greenfield and David Andrew Merlau of Greenfield; brothers, Christopher Charles Merlau of Morristown and Michael George Merlau of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Tilyn Rena Jalyn Murray, Grant T. Wildman, Jeremiah Lee Merlau, Leilani Rachelle Wildman and Hunter R.D. Merlau; parents, Judith “Judi” (Etter) and Charles W. Merlau, Jr. of Greenfield; many loving family members and wife, Billie (Nichols) Merlau.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2015, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140.  A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2015, also at the mortuary.  Rev. Mark Wesler will be officiating. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Cemetery.
