Deceptive letters prompt scam warning

INDIANAPOLIS — Secretary of State Connie Lawson recently announced that some Indiana businesses have received deceptive letters that appear to come from the office’s business services division.

Two types of letters are being sent, officials in her office said.

One letter solicits a $125 annual fee and states that it will be used for record-keeping purposes and processing of the company’s annual minutes. This letter cites state law at the beginning of the document and states it originates from Indiana Council for Corporations, which might be confused for a government agency. The return address on the letter is a P.O. Box in Speedway.

The other letter is similar but it asks for a $150 fee and originates from the Division of Corporate Services. Its return address is in Zionsville.

Lawson said similar letters have been sent during the past few years.

“Earlier this year, letters were sent during tax season, when people were busy and may not have had time to read each document they receive. Now, they may be targeting businesses during the end of the fiscal year, when companies are once again busy,” she said.

“I urge everyone to use caution and to be on the lookout for these letters,” she added.

The office is concerned about the letters because business owners might believe responding to it substitutes the need for filing a business entity report, which is required by law.

The office no longer sends report filing notices by mail.
