Cumberland bowler rolls an 831 series

On Monday night, Shawn Hobbs (pictured), of Cumberland, flirted with a perfect game on three different occasions.

Opening with a 279, followed by a 256 and finishing with a 296, Hobbs bowled a 831 series in the adult youth league at Strike Force Lanes. The 23-year-old bowls with Clayton Spegal, 16, regularly. Spegal rolled a 596 series.

Prep baseball league returns next month

The High School Fall Baseball League will relaunch again this year, beginning Aug. 23.

The league is a network of 20 high school wood bat fall leagues throughout Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky that compete Sundays.

Each league plays a six-week regular season which includes a League Championship Tournament. League championship teams earn a berth into the HSFBL Championship Tournament to compete for the HSFBL title.

The league culminates with the tournament as well as All-Star Exposure Games in October in Indianapolis.

Each league also plays a College Game Day at a partner college during the regular season. Players will receive a wood bat from the Hoosier Bat Company, a team Dri-fit game jersey and a free college player profile.

The HSFBL is open to all incoming 2015 high school players (2016-19 graduates).

Early registration deadline to receive a discount is Aug. 3. Registration will be accepted through Aug. 17.

Booster club creating section for seniors

The New Palestine High School Athletic Booster Club is creating a special “Senior Messages” advertising section in the 2015-16 sports programs. The new section will feature ads with special messages to the athletes of the Class of 2016, as well as those in marching band, winter percussion and pep band.

Those interested will be able to purchase the $25 ads and write a three-line message for the student.

The deadline for Class of 2016 Senior Message ad submissions is Aug. 10. The ads will be featured in both the fall and winter programs.

Annual Hauler Parade to kick off Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS — Activities preceding the 22nd annual Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 at the Brickyard NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will once again include the seventh annual Hauler Parade today on Main Street in Speedway.

The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

The traditional parade of more than 40 haulers will arrive on Main Street at 6 p.m. Fans can get an up-close look at the Haulers while they are parked between 10th and 15th Streets.

A special appearance will be made by Hauler Parade Grand Marshal Jeff Kyle, the American hero who is the namesake of the Crown Royal Presents the Jeff Kyle 400 Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at IMS.

Kyle will be integrated into a series of VIP activities throughout the race weekend that will honor America’s past and present military heroes.

Accompanying activities will include live music from Indiana-based country recording artist Jai Baker. Native Hoosier and country music singer-songwriter Jessie Brown also will perform on the Hauler Parade Stage located on the north end of Main Street.

Parking will be available on Speedway town streets west of Main Street and also at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s gravel Main Gate Parking Lot, located on the south side of 16th Street, east of the Speedway gas station.

At 7:55 p.m. fans may watch the haulers parade north on Main Street and east on 16th Street as they depart the Hauler Parade single-file and enter the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

5 p.m.: Hauler Parade begins. Live music by Jai Baker (Hauler Parade Stage, Main Street, Speedway)

6 p.m.: NASCAR Sprint Cup Haulers arrive on Main Street

6:10 p.m.: Hauler Parade Welcome with IMS President J. Douglas Boles, Jeff Kyle, Miss Sprint Cup, Miss Coors Light (Hauler Parade Stage)

7 p.m.: Live music by Jessie Brown (Hauler Parade Stage)

7:55 p.m.: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Haulers depart from Main Street

8 p.m.: Event concludes
