Greenfield Area Soccer Club registration open

The Greenfield Area Soccer Club announced several keys dates and is accepting online registrations for the upcoming season.

Interested families and players can register for the fall season of GASC Recreational TigersFC online at greenfieldsoccer.org until July 26. Late fee registration starts July 27, with an additional $10 to cover late uniform orders.

There are no games scheduled for Labor Day or Riley Days weekend.

The GASC TigersFC league offers divisions for players from U4 to U18. Cost to play (per person) ranges from $47.50 to $62.50.

Aug. 3: First week of practice

Aug. 21: First games

Oct. 9 to 10: No games during fall break

Oct. 23 to 24: Last games of the season

Local Special Olympics fundraiser tonight

The Hancock County Indiana Special Olympics is hosting a fundraising event tonight.

A Jim Dandy Night will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. A percentage of the food purchased will be donated to the Hancock County Indiana Special Olympics.

Registration open for Mt. Vernon camp

Mt. Vernon High School is hosting youth football camps this month.

Registration forms can be found at maraudersathletics.com under Marauder HQ tab. All grades are as of fall 2015.

All football camps run from Monday to July 23 at the high school football fields. Sessions for first- and second-graders are scheduled to last from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Third- to eighth-graders will practice from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The cost per camper is $25. Interested participants must register by Monday.

Pacers, Turner reach contract agreement

The Indiana Pacers announced Monday they have signed first-round draft pick Myles Turner to a contract. Turner was the 11th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Turner, a 6-11, 240-pound forward/center, played collegiately at Texas, averaging 10.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocked shots per game.

The 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year recently played for the Pacers’ summer league team in Orlando where in three games he was the Pacers’ second-leading scorer at 18.7 ppg. Along with teammate Joe Young, he was named to NBA TV’s All-Tournament Team.

New IHSAA assistant commissioner approved

Kerrie Schludecker has been approved by the IHSAA Executive Committee as an assistant commissioner. Her appointment is effective Aug. 1.

Schludecker has served as athletics director at Boone Grove High School and Middle School.

She was one of seven finalists interviewed for the position and fills the vacancy left by Sandy Searcy, who has accepted a position with the executive staff of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Schludecker, 30, will administer the sports of volleyball, girls and boys swimming, and softball for the IHSAA.

Prior to her time at Boone Grove, she worked two years as athletics director at Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City and also taught physical education at St. Stanislaus Catholic School.

Achonwa representing Canada in Pan Am Games

Indiana Fever rookie Natalie Achonwa will represent her native Canada in the upcoming Pan Am Games.

Achonwa was a member of the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team and a first-round draft pick by the Fever in the 2014 WNBA Draft.

Achonwa averaged 7.2 points per game as a member of the 2012 Canadian squad that qualified for the Olympic quarterfinals in London. Canada is the host nation in this year’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, Thursday through Monday.

A candidate for WNBA Rookie of the Year honors, she was tabbed earlier this week as the WNBA Rookie of the Month for June.

She leads all WNBA rookies in scoring (9.8 points per game) and field-goal percentage (52.9 percent). She is third among first-year players with 4.5 rebounds per contest.
