Teen makes history at Indiana Open

Westfield’s Timothy Hildebrand, 18, became the second youngest golfer to win the Indiana Open Championship.

Hildebrand shot a four-day total of 16-under-par 272 at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis to win the centennial event last week. In 1970, Bill Krazert III won the tournament after just turning 18 to become the youngest winner all time.

Playing in the lead group with Hildebrand was Adam Schenk, the 2013 Indiana Amateur Champion and Eric Steger, the 2010 Indiana Amateur Champion. Despite the high-level competition, Hildebrand maintained his composure.

Hildebrand headed into the final round with a five shot lead over Schenk and Steger at 14-under-par.

The teenager made birdies on holes 10 and 12 and his lead grew to three after the gap narrowed to one stroke. He ended his day with a bogey on 18, but he was able to claim a two-shot victory and his first Indiana Golf win.

Hildebrand was a member of Westfield High School’s 2015 IHSAA State Championship Team and will attend Purdue University this fall.
