City-county team assists in Rush County standoff

CARTHAGE — The joint city/county Emergency Response Team assisted the Rush County Sheriff’s Department on Friday night after a Carthage man threatened his family members with a gun, police said.

Officers were dispatched just after 7 p.m. to a residence in the 11000 block of Rush County Road 980W, near Charlottesville.

Police said William Hurd, 36, pointed a firearm at his family members, who then called 911. When police arrived at the scene, Hurd refused to leave the home and threatened to shoot police, officers said.

The situation ended just before 5 a.m., when Hurd was arrested and taken to the Rush County Jail. More than 25 Hancock County law enforcement officers were at the scene throughout the nearly 10-hour incident.
