Fire investigation briefly shuts downtown highway

GREENFIELD — A smell of smoke coming from a downtown Greenfield business briefly closed State Road 9 near U.S. 40 on Monday while emergency crews investigated.

Firefighters believe a heating and cooling unit on the roof of an office building in the first block of State Road 9 broke and began emitting smoke, Greenfield Fire Chief James Roberts said.

Workers in one of the buildings called 911 around 10 a.m. after smelling the smoke, but no fire was discovered.

All buildings northeast of the intersection were evacuated as a precaution, Roberts said.

State Road 9 traffic was rerouted briefly via North Street while emergency crews were in the area. The road was reopened about a half-hour later.
