New Palestine football hosts golf competition

The New Palestine Grid Iron Alliance is inviting all Dragons fans to take part in this year’s Dragon Classic Golf Outing on July 11 at Hawk’s Tail in Greenfield.

The event opens with registration at 7 a.m., follows with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and ends with lunch.

The cost is $70 per player with prizes awarded in several categories. The event is sponsored by Bell Mortuary but other sponsorship opportunities are still available.

For those unable to attend, donations are being accepted to help support the Grid Iron Alliance. With a donation of $25 or more, individuals will receive a Dragon football car window decal.

Eastern Hancock set for basketball alumni games

Several former Royals will take the court on Wednesday night for the annual Eastern Hancock boys basketball alumni games.

The night begins at 5:30 p.m. with the JV vs. the Old-timers. The Varsity team will take on the 2013-15 alumni squad at 6:30 p.m. The finale pits Blue vs. White as players from 2000-12 lace up their sneakers for action at 7:30 p.m.

Admission for the event is $5 at the door.


Registration open for Marauders camps

Mt. Vernon High School will host several athletics camps during the summer break.

Registration forms can be found at under Marauder HQ tab. All grades are as of fall 2015.

Youth soccer (boys and girls)

Camp is July 6 to 10 at high school soccer complex.

Grades 1 through 9: 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Carmel wins 3rd straight state tennis state title

The Carmel Greyhounds finished the season a perfect 21-0 on Saturday to claim their third straight girls tennis team state championship.

Only needing a mere 90 minutes, the Greyhounds swept Munster (18-4) in straight sets during the title match at North Central High School.

Carmel defeated Jasper 5-0 in Friday’s quarterfinals and moved past Cathedral 4-1 in Saturday morning’s semifinals. Cathedral (21-2) finished the year with only two losses. Both came against the Greyhounds.

Carmel coach Mike Bostic, who is stepping down as both the girls and boys tennis coach, led the girls to a flawless 58-0 mark the past three seasons. He coached the boys to five state championships in recent years.

Bloomington South’s Denize Azcui was announced as the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner. She will continue her tennis career at Western Michigan this fall.
