Carmel wins 3rd straight state tennis state title

The Carmel Greyhounds finished the season a perfect 21-0 on Saturday to claim their third straight girls tennis team state championship.

Only needing a mere 90 minutes, the Greyhounds swept Munster (18-4) in straight sets during the title match at North Central High School.

Carmel defeated Jasper 5-0 in Friday’s quarterfinals and moved past Cathedral 4-1 in Saturday morning’s semifinals. Cathedral (21-2) finished the year with only two losses. Both came against the Greyhounds.

Carmel coach Mike Bostic, who is stepping down as both the girls and boys tennis coach, led the girls to a flawless 58-0 mark the past three seasons. He coached the boys to five state championships in recent years.

Bloomington South’s Denize Azcui was announced as the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner. She will continue her tennis career at Western Michigan this fall.
