FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon High School winter guard recently advanced to state finals for the first time in school history and then placed 11th out of 19 guards in its class.

The 18-student varsity winter guard show was titled “The Breaking Light.”

Members previously auditioned to be in the varsity winter guard and were chosen in November for this select group. They practiced twice a week for three hours and on the weekend had either a nine-hour practice or were competing.
