Lila Levon Nannemann, 90, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Levon was born on Feb. 23, 1925, in Humeston, IA., the daughter of John and Louisa Elizabeth (Sumpter) Thompson.

Her mother taught her to sing as a child, her father took her to church to sing when she was six years old. Levon grew up singing, sometimes in the rain. She enjoyed singing in church choirs, Indiana State Women’s Chorus, Sweet Adelines, and directed women’s chorus at church in Manilla, Iowa. She also taught children’s chorus at South Street (Trinity Park) Methodist Church in Greenfield, Indiana.

Levon is survived by one son, John (Rita) Spreen; two daughters, Linda Ratliff (Norman B. Jr.) and Mary (Jack Grogan Jr.) Spreen; grandchildren, Karen Elsea, Kevin Spreen, Dylan Hengstler, Joel Hengstler, Abe Grogan, and Lucy Davis; 11 great- grandchildren; one great- great- grandchild; one brother, Jerry (Frieda) Thompson and one sister, Mona Phippen.

Levon is preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Shirley; five brothers, Perry, Willard and Henry; one sister, Delsa Smith. She had two additional brothers Gurney and Junior “Pete” Thompson

A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. Iowa City, IA. 52240.  Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
