GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is warning of a phone scam targeting county residents from an individual claiming to be a member of the sheriff’s department staff.

Several complaints were received Monday from residents who received phone calls from an individual claiming to be an officer with department.

The individual reportedly told the residents there was an active warrant for their arrest in Hancock County and the only way to resolve the matter would be to send the individual a certain amount of bond money. Caller ID shows numbers associated with the county jail and 911 center, but these are fraudulent, police said.

Officers said they do not resolve issues over the phone. They urge anyone who receives a call from the scammer to ignore it and not give the individual any money or personal information.
