Track and field event open to all youngsters

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters are sponsoring a track and field event May 13 for elementary school students in Grades 2 to 5 from all schools. The purpose of this event is to introduce students to track and field.

Each participant will receive a day of practice with Eastern Hancock high school and middle school track athletes Monday, and a water bottle. Each student will participate in two track events (sprint and distance) and two field events (long jump and shot put).  

Cost is $15, with a registration deadline of Friday. More information and entry forms are available at ehathletics.org.

Mt. Vernon grad earns all-conference softball honors

Mt. Vernon graduate and Grand Valley State University sophomore Ellie Balbach has earned all-conference softball honors. Balbach, a pitcher and designated player, was named to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team.

Balbach has appeared in 40 games, with 37 starts. The lefty is hitting .303 for the season, and she hit .356 (third-best on the team) in conference play. She has 33 hits with nine doubles, and has recorded 23 walks, third-most of any player in the GLIAC. Balbach has also driven in 23 runs, while carrying a .422 on-base percentage.

In the circle, the Balbach owns a 8-2 record with a 2.08 earned run average. She has struck out 40 batters in 57.1 innings and allowed three runs or fewer in 14 of her 16 appearances.

Grand Valley State (32-15) was eliminated by NCAA Division II No. 20-ranked Ashland (38-7) in the GLIAC tournament, 3-1 on Saturday. The Lakers hope to be invited to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament as an at-large team. Seedings will be announced this week.

Royals up to bat against cancer

Eastern Hancock baseball and Hancock Regional Cancer Hospital will host a cancer awareness game at 10 a.m. on May 16 when the Royals host Frankton. Special jerseys will be worn by the varsity and junior varsity teams. Family and friends will have the opportunity to purchase the same special jerseys, with proceeds donated to the hospital.

Cost is $20, and jerseys can be customized with a first or last name of someone affected by cancer, along with a jersey number. Orders due by Wednesday.
