The Mt. Vernon girls tennis team pulled off a 4-1 upset of state-ranked Franklin Central on Tuesday.

Molly Laughlin and Alaina Nelson, at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, won in straight sets for the Marauders, as did Addison Eads and Emily Annakin at No. 1 doubles and Brianna Partin and Kendra Eberhard at No. 2 doubles.

“They had girls out, but you play who you bring,” Mt. Vernon coach Gabe Muterspaugh said of the Flashes, who received votes in the preseason state coaches poll.

The Marauders (1-1) will host Shenandoah tonight.

Morristown edges Greenfield-Central

The Yellow Jackets scored a 3-2 win against the host Cougars (0-1) Tuesday. Emma Vowell (No. 3 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Kate Henderson and Claire Talbott picked up wins for the Cougars.

Greenfield-Central will visit Warren Central on Monday.

Strong singles play leads New Palestine

The New Palestine girls tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season Tuesday with a 4-1 win against visiting Triton Central.

At singles, Alana Henry won 6-0, 6-2, and Kristi LeBeau had a 6-1, 6-0 victory. At doubles, both Lauren Hardebeck/Jamie Mittman and Katie Settergren/Cassie Willhelm both won 6-1, 6-0.

“We played some pretty strong singles players at Triton Central, and our 1 and 2 did a good job of winning a lot of games,” New Palestine coach Chris Hardin said. “Not a bad second match.”

The Dragon JV also won 9-1.

The Dragons travel to Rushville on Thursday.

Tigers top Marauders with 7th-inning rally

Yorktown scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 2-1 win against visiting Mt. Vernon (2-2, 0-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) on Tuesday.

In the JV game, Mt. Vernon prevailed, 7-1.

The Marauders will host Chatard today.
