What’s been the early response from the team?

“These guys are very coachable and have a high desire to win. They are putting in a lot of time and effort to get ready for the season. It’s been very enjoyable so far.”

What is your golfing background?

“I’m a lifelong golfer. I’ve played since I was very young. I played golf (my senior year of) high school at Southport. I also coached boys and girls down at Franklin Middle School. I was going to be the junior high coach, but when this opening came up, I seized the opportunity. It has always been my goal to become a high school golf coach.”

What is your primary goal as the new Cougars coach?

“My goal is to take whatever skill level they are at and upgrade it. I want to elevate their knowledge of the game and their ability to manage a course. That involves walking the course with the kids as we practice to talk through scenarios and working on situational golf. Not every shot is always going to be the same. It’s hole-by-hole golf.”

How have you honed your craft as a coach?

“When I was in Franklin, I was fortunate our home course was at Legends, where I got to talk to a lot of instructors and pros who taught me fundamental drills to use with kids. I have also sought out some individuals who have helped me come up with some drills and practices for my players. My job out here is to create a routine for the kids, so they can create swing memory and be successful repeatedly on the course.”

Expectations for what you’d like your team to accomplishment, as far as wins and losses?

“I’m just going to have to play it by ear. For some of these guys it’s their first opportunity to play at the varsity level. So, we’ll just have to see how the season unfolds. It’s going to be new for all of us. So for me to say what expectations I have, I’m not quite sure on that yet.”

Who are your favorite pro golfers?

“That’s a tough one. I would have to say that I’ve always liked Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. They were both mentally strong and excellent individuals on and off the course. They were a couple of guys who consistently knew how to compete.”

How is your game?

“(Laughs) I’d say I’m an average golfer. I’m better with my drive than my (short game).”
