Vote for Girls Basketball People’s Choice winner

The Daily Reporter soon will unveil its 2014-15 Hancock County Girls Basketball Player of the Year. We invite our readers to name a winner, as well, by voting in an online poll.

Who, in your opinion, was the best girls basketball player this season? The top vote-getter will be named People’s Choice.

The choices: Eastern Hancock’s Emiley Carlton and Hope Spaulding, Greenfield-Central’s Katie Helgason and Madison Wise, Mt. Vernon’s Olivia Coleman, Ariana Sandefur and Sydney Shelton, and New Palestine’s Raegan McMurray and Gia Nitschke.

Through Wednesday evening, Helgason led the way with 963 votes, or 52 percent. Wise (547 votes, 29 percent), Shelton (153, 8 percent) and Carlton (91 votes, 5 percent) were next.

Shelton named to Junior All-Stars core group

Mt. Vernon junior guard Sydney Shelton has been selected to the Indiana Junior All-Stars core group of six.

The Junior All-Stars will play two games against the Indiana All-Star senior girls, tentatively set for June 8 and 10 at sites to be announced. The coaches for the Junior All-Stars have not yet been announced.

The players in the core group will play in both games. The North group players will join the core group for one game, and the South group players will join the core group for the other game. The Indiana senior All-Stars will play the Kentucky senior All-Stars on June 12 in Lexington and June 13 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Junior All-Stars will not play Kentucky juniors this year.

The Junior All-Star team is determined by the 22-member Indiana Basketball Coaches Association all-state panel in conjunction with its selection of the IBCA/Subway Underclass All-State Team.

Cougars wrestlers grab statewide mat honors

The following Greenfield-Central High School wrestlers have received awards by the state coaches association: Brady Wright, Junior Academic All State Honorable Mention; Travis Gibson, Senior Academic All State Honorable Mention; and Jacob Morris and Zach Phillips, Senior Academic All State Special Mention.

Also, Jacob Miller (106 pounds) and Cameron Nuckols (170) were selected as part of an Indiana All-Star group that will face Illinois All-Stars at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence North.

Greenfield-Central hosting 2A regional

Greenfield-Central will host the boys basketball Class 2A basketball regional Saturday. Doors open at 9 a.m. The schedule:

10 a.m.: Park Tudor (22-2) vs. Northeastern (22-3)

Noon: Cloverdale (22-5) vs. Crispus Attucks (18-5)

8 p.m.: Championship game

All-Regional tickets are on sale at the Greenfield-Central athletics office. Cost is $10. Individual tickets are $7 per session.
