INDIANAPOLIS — Secretary of State Connie Lawson warns business owners of a deceptive scam letter.

Some Indiana businesses have received a letter that appears as if it came from the office’s business services division.

It solicits a $125 annual fee and states it will be used for record keeping and processing of a company’s annual minutes.

Lawson is concerned businesses might be confused by the letter and believe responding to it substitutes the need for filing a business entity report, which is required by state law.

The office no longer sends report filing notices to Hoosier businesses by mail.

Businesses in Indiana can securely fill out this report online through the Secretary of State’s website.

Lawson is urging business owner to be on the lookout for such letters. The return address on some of them references a box at a UPS store in Speedway.
