Melvin L. Cannon, 92, of Middletown, Ind., passed away Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at IU Health-Saxony Hospital in Fishers. Melvin was born on Sept. 17, 1922.

He served in the Army in WWII in Europe, and was a Purple Heart recipient and awarded two bronze stars. He was an employee of General Motors in Anderson for 45 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 216 and a Life-Time Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Cherryl (Salyers) of 71 years; a son, James L. (Belinda) Cannon from Anderson; daughter, Janet L. (Timothy) Paskins from Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren, Leigh Anne (Michael) McCullough from Noblesville, Kimberly Cannon from Chesterfield, Ind., Christina Cannon from San Jose’, Calif., Derek Nevins from Orlando, Fla., Ross Nevins from St. Petersburg, Fla.; and eight great-grandchildren, Rick, Victoria, Mitchell, Kalio, Isaac, Nathan, Campbell and Emory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Flora Cannon; two brothers, Henry and Wilburn; and two sisters, Dortha and Dolly.

Visitation will be held from 12 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral services will be held immediately following the visitation. Pastor Steven Lane will be officiating. Burial will be at Philadelphia Cemetery in Philadelphia, Ind., with full military rites presented by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Southern Heights Christian Church, 5401 Madison Avenue, Anderson, IN 46013.
