James “Herb” Tompkins, 80, of Wilkinson, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. He was born April 21, 1934, in Kavito, Ky., the son of James Willard and Julia Ann (Roberts) Tompkins.

He was married to Emma Ann (Polston) Tompkins on Dec. 31, 1953, in Shirley, Ind. They were married 61 years.

He was a member of By His Grace Ministry and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 40 ½ years. He was a truck driver for White’s Petroleum in Shirley for 18 years.

Survivors include his wife, Emma; daughters, Diana Clapp, Shirley IN., Cheryl (Larry) Polston, Nicholasville, Ky.; sons, Jimmy (Ruby) Tompkins, Powell, Tenn., Mark (Connie) Tompkins, Knightstown; grandchildren, Julia (Glade) Fredericks, Jessica (Travis) Hinton, Justin, Brandon Darkis, Abigail (Andy) Ingersoll, Samuel (Breigh) Tompkins, Amanda Polston, Melinda (Derrek) Barkley, Daniel Polston (fiancé Claire Wolken);  great-grandchildren, Jacob and James Fredericks, Jenna Hinton, Traiton, Tristan, Kodan, and Kacie Darkis, Olivia, Elinor and Sophia Ingersoll, Eisley Tompkins; sisters, Winifred Tharp, Mich., Georgiana Childress, Greenfield, Ruth Redmon Norris, Shirley, Ind.; brothers, Laramie Tompkins and Tony Tompkins, Shirley, Ind., Ted Tompkins, Markleville, Ind.; stepmother, Theria Tompkins, Shirley, Ind.; aunt, Sylvia Tompkins, Jabez, Ky.; several cousins; nieces; nephews; and many, many friends who morn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Estelle McDonald; brothers, Darwin, Randy and Bob Tompkins; grandson, David Tompkins; great-grandson, Garrett Hinton; and son-in-law, Gary Clapp.

Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014. A Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, at Condo and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Pastor David Todd officiating. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.
