Lena Marie Simpson, 89, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Kindred Healthcare in Greenfield. She was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Wayne County, Ky., a daughter of the late Floyd Denney and Bonnie Mae Lowe.
She was a waitress at Top Hat Pizza on Broad Street for many years. Lena cherished poetry and loved writing her own poems. She was family oriented and a very nurturing mother. Lena loved the Lord and served him faithfully as a member of the South Memorial Drive Church of God, where she was a member for 50 years.
She is survived by her children, Betty (Cecil) Burnett of Russell Springs, Ky., Rita Custer of Greenfield, Louise Simpson of New Castle, Mike Simpson of Muncie; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Jean Covey of Indianapolis; brother, Rev. Hayden Denney of Monticello, Ky. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Marty Simpson (7/2/2014); one grandson; one great-grandson; three brothers; one sister and one baby sister.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at the funeral home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Chris Gammello officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery-West Lawn Addition.
