Ilene (Smith) Bailey, 76, of Morristown, passed away Oct. 14, 2014, at Community North Hospital. She was born on Dec. 10, 1937, in Washington, Ind., as the daughter of Ray Arthur and Zelma Faye (Parsons) Smith.

She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1955.  Mrs. Bailey received her Bachelors of Science in Education and Masters in Education from Indiana State University.  She married Milton “Pat” C. Bailey on Aug. 31, 1958 in Montgomery, Ind.

Ilene began her teaching career in Illinois before moving to Morristown, Indiana where she was a Business and Physical Education teacher at Morristown High School from 1961 to 1994. She was a member of the Morristown Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary in Morristown, Mu Beta book club and Shelby County Senior Citizens. Ilene was the past president and held many offices of the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. She was the founder of Morristown High School Girls Athletic Association. Ilene was the Girls Athletic Director and coached volleyball, basketball, track and cheerleading at Morristown High School.  She was the Government Director for Indiana Girls’ State and a Government Leader for Girls’ Nation. In 1992, Ilene was a Democratic candidate for Indiana State Senate. She was a member of the Morristown Library Literacy Council.  Ilene enjoyed gardening, and she traveled to all 50 states.

Ilene is survived by her daughters, Cathy Bailey of Lake Mary, FLa. and Lynn (Mark) Zwilling of Newburgh, Ind.; brothers, Richard (Wilma) Smith of Plainville, Ind. and Jerry (Debby) Smith of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews, Glenda Scudder, Bob Smith, Barb Wilkinson, Roger Smith, Brian Smith, and Sarah Rayner; three grandchildren, Tyler Masterson, Jared (Sierra) and A.J. Zwilling; and one great-grandson, Wyatt Zwilling.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Eldon Smith.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at 10 a.m. also at the mortuary with viewing one hour prior to the service. Pastor Fred Hickman will be officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery in Washington, Ind. at 3 p.m. EST.
